Professor Michael Iyiola Jegede

Professor Michael Iyiola Jegede was born at Ilesa, 11th August, 1935. He was educated at Methodist Primary School, Otapete, Ilesa; and Ilesa Grammar School before he proceeded to London for further studies. He studied law at Kings’ College (1960 – 1963) University of London for his first degree LL.B (Hons) Second Class (Upper Division) and was called to the English Bar at the Middle Temple, London, in November 1962. He later attended Yale Law School, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut United States of America for his Masters of Law (1963-64) and Doctor of Science of Law Degrees (1967-69). He was awarded Sterling Fellowship for his Masters of Law degree and Ford Fellowship for the Doctor of Science Law degree.

Professor Jegede was appointed Lecturer at the University of Lagos in 1964. He became the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos in 1972 in succession to the Late Dr. T.O. Elias when the latter was appointed Chief Justice of Nigeria. He was the substantive Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1975-1980. During his tenure as the Dean, he was also a member of the Governing Council of the University, representing the Congregation and later the Senate. (1972- 1980). He was also saddled with the responsibility of transforming the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies from the drawing board to its present status. Indeed, Professor Jegede was the first de facto Director of the Institute. He was for many years a member of the Governing Council of the Institute until its dissolution in 1994.

Sometime in 1981, Professor Jegede was invited by the University of Ibadan to assist in the setting up of the Faculty of Law of that University. He was the first Professor and Head of the Department of Law of the University.

On his retirement from the University, Professor Jegede set up his Private Legal Practice under the name of M.I. JEGEDE & CO., which now consists of several Associates, while he remains the Founder and the Principal Partner. He is the Chairman of MIJ Professional Publishers Limited, publishers and suppliers of distinctive Law Books authored by distinguished Jurists and Scholars. Professor Jegede is the author of many distinctive law books and legal materials. Professor Jegede is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (S.A.N.). His recent engagements include his appointment as Chairman of the National Committee on the Reform of Legal Education in Nigeria and Chairman of the Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board.

He is a member of Ilesa Frontliners, Metropolitan Club, Current Chairman, Lagos State Chapter Ilesa Grammar School Old Students Association, Member Arch Bishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos and Jehovah Nissi African Church, Araromi, Ilesa, Chairman Smadac Securities Limited and also a one time National Legal Adviser of the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Professor Jegede is married with children.
